President's Letter Happy New Year! Welcome to the new Leader to Leader Institute monthly newsletter. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to thank you for your interest in and support of the Leader to Leader Institute over the years. As the new President and CEO, I have been presented with the great opportunity to use our 19 years of strategic thinking, contributed by today's foremost leaders, to help address the many challenges of this time in our nation and in the world. Peter Drucker may have looked in his crystal ball when he said: "The knowledge society has to be a society of three sectors: a public sector, that is, government; a private sector, that is, business; and a social sector. And it is also, I submit, becoming increasingly clear that it is in and through the social sector that a modern developed society can again create responsible and achieving citizenship, can again give individuals –- and especially knowledge people –- a sphere in which they can make a difference in society, and a sphere in which they re-create community." I hope you agree that the Leader to Leader Institute is uniquely positioned to make a significant contribution of ideas and insights that will enable leaders in the private, public and social sectors to guide America and the world through the current crises. It is your contribution of time, talent and treasure that has provided us the opportunity to serve the social sector in this time of critical need. As we continue our work and formulate plans to provide critical resources that will support the leadership in the social sector, we will keep you informed of our progress; of the opportunities for you to participate in our programs; and for you to contribute new leadership ideas. We continue to build on the work contributed by more than 400 "thought leaders" including writers like Jim Collins, Warren Bennis, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Noel Tichy and many others. Congratulations To... Frances Hesselbein, the Leader to Leader Institute Chairman of the Board of Governors and Founding President, was presented with the International Leadership Association Lifetime Achievement Award in Los Angeles on November 15, at its 10th annual conference, Global Leadership: Portraits of the Past, Visions for the Future. Hesselbein is among a distinguished first "class" of honorees recognized as part of the ILA's new Legacy Project, "as instrumental in the founding of the discipline of leadership." Leader to Leader Institute board member, Mark Goldsmith, was one of a dozen winners of the 2008 Purpose Prize, a six-year, $17 million program for people over age 60 who are taking on society's biggest challenges. The Purpose Prize, now in its third year, is the nation's only large-scale investment in social innovators in the second half of their life. Goldsmith's "Getting Out and Staying Out" program is slashing recidivating rates by offering young men at Rikers Island education, coaching, life-skill instruction and job training. Career expert Lindsey Pollak has joined ABC News on Campus as a contributor, ABC News Executive Producer of Special Programming and Development John Green announced in December. Pollak will be writing a weekly online career advice column for college students.
