February 2011
Dear Friends,
In the Fall of 2010, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and I delivered a leadership dialogue in A Day of Civic Action and 900 Arizona residents who passionately believe a civil community and society must exist. With the recent events in Arizona, we are reminded of our belief, and acknowledge that only through shared example can civil dialogue and a civil society be achieved.
If every single organization and every leader in all three sectors tomorrow morning began with "Today, I will treat everyone with respect, even if I don't agree with you, I will respond in a respectful way." If we did this, imagine the remarkable change we would achieve in our communities.
Our battle cry remains the same. We continue to strive to engage in global civic dialogue in a global civic society.
In August 2010, many of you joined us along with 750 leaders, representing 34 countries and 400 organizations for our inaugural LEADERSHIP by Example webinar. Throughout 2011 we have planned a series of timely webinar LEADERSHIP conversations, diverse, inclusive and global.
Our first webinar this year is March 9, hosted by Debbe Kennedy, author and founder of the Global Dialogue Center, along with Emily Duncan, City Council, Union City and former HP VP, Culture and Global Diversity; Jessica Roemischer, pianist and transformational advisor; and Joan K. Snyder, Senior Manager, Segment Marketing, Forest Laboratories. Already, 161 participants from 17 countries including the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, India, Kenya, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, and Trinidad have joined us. We hope you will too.

Leadership Dialogues: Your Insights
Each month, bestselling author (Now,Build a Great Business) and business coach Mark Thompson, shares an experience from one of his many Leadership Dialogues. This month, Mark sat down with GE CEO Jeff Immelt, now also the newly appointed chairman of the White House Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.
"My advice is do every job like you’re going to have it forever. At GE, I would always do anything asked of me with integrity," he insisted. "I would try and do it in 80% of the time and then expand my horizon. I was constantly trying to stretch my boundaries. But it always started with meeting my responsibilities first: doing the job, doing it well, doing it with integrity."
As Jeff says, one of the easiest ways to get derailed is to say, 'This is beneath me, I can do more' instead of showing how well you can do it!
"I had some jobs for one year, some for five, but I valued every step along the way and did them all like I’d have them forever."
Watch Jeff's advice.

Plugged by Krissi and Dan Barr
As a leader, the most obvious way to guide your organization to success is to help your team get the right things done. It sounds so simple. It isn’t.
Can you think of a time, when despite all good intentions, you didn't get something done? The program that doesn't get launched on-time, the customer meeting that keeps getting rescheduled.
Plugged makes the connection between success in golf and success in your sector -- the message is distilled through the acronym PAR:
Prioritize -- focus on what matters most.
Adapt -- see change as an opportunity.
be Responsible -- take ownership of the outcome.
How can you translate PAR into success for your organization? Krissi and Dan Barr have created two free online tools that turn these ideas into actionable processes. The first is an online assessment that lets each member of your team identify where they are in terms of their ability to prioritize, adapt, and be responsible. The second is a downloadable scorecard that makes it easy to map out the planning and implementation steps necessary for success. Both are available at www.PluggedTheBook.com.
Share a piece of daily inspiration with your coworkers, friends and family by offering them a complimentary subscription to the Leadership Tip of the Day.
