My Life in Leadership

"The practices of the past are not relevant to the present we are living and the future we envision."

March 2012

Dear Friends,

Did you know that the very first bill President Obama signed into law was the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which helps protect a woman’s right to equal pay?

March 8 we celebrate International Women's Day—an occasion to look back on struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, to look ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations. (Last year, we hosted a Women's Day Global Webinar, which you can still view online.) This year, you will find ideas and inspiration to support and honor women on our blog.

Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President and Chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls details how The White House Administration is working to break down barriers for women and girls, at home and abroad. Please take a look.

Every Saturday at 12:00 Noon for one-half hour, (since 1956!) Richard Heffner—who also teaches at Rutgers—produces The Open Mind on PBS. I joined him in February for a fascinating dialogue. We talked about nature vs. nurture in regard to leadership, we talked about the failure of civil dialogue and the racism that exists today. But we also talked about the Millennials who will change our world and the hope for the future. Our conversation, In Search of Leadership, can be viewed online.

May March be filled with hope for the future.

PROFILE IN INNOVATION: SOS Outreach

Each month, we profile innovative sources—a person, organization, service or program—to inspire and inform our network.

SOS LogoSports have always contained values of team work and leadership combined with physical stamina and mental awareness. While many are accessible—like baseball or basketball— through schools, others involving the outdoors—backpacking or snowboarding—are harder to come by, especially for young people living in low-income neighborhoods.

In 1993, Arn Menconi, Founder and Executive Director of SOS Outreach, created an opportunity in Colorado's Vail Valley for at-risk youth to participate in snowboarding lessons while engaging in a leadership program focusing on Five Core Values; courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, and compassion.
