July/August 2013

Dear Friends,

It's been too hot for my neighbor's swimming pool—but I've been refreshed and energized in a number of different ways: first here in New York city at the Women Leadership Summit hosted by The United Nation's Happiness Assembly, The Hatchery, and the Wall Street Journal. In an auditorium with about 300 vibrant young women and a few brave men, Gabriella Stern led an intimate dialogue with Christine Comaford, Carole Hyatt, and me.

Later, I "virtually" joined the third Annual World Business & Executive Coach Summit, hosted by Ben Croft and connected with global thought leaders, many of whom I am now in contact with on Twitter.

Later this month, 50 global University students will gather in Pittsburgh for the Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic engagement for the 5th annual Leadership Summit. I have enjoyed keeping in touch with Academy Alumni and I look forward to the energy that will exist this year. Regina Herzlinger, Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School will provide this year’s Hesselbein Lecture.

Of special note, we are working on selling out our signature fundraiser, the Leader of the Future Award Dinner. This gala dinner, here in New York City, is a public celebration of values-based leaders. Annually, more than 100 guests gather at 320 Park Avenue, on the 35th floor of the Mutual of America building for an evening of networking across sectors.

We are grateful for the privilege to tell the story of exemplary Leaders of the Future and this year, to honor Beth Comstock, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of GE. You can view photos from previous celebrations as well as learn more about this event, which allows us to continue to offer leadership resources and inspiration.

Recommended Reading: First Globals

First GlobalsFirst Globals: Understanding, Managing and Unleashing the Potential of Our Millennial Generation, by veteran pollster John Zogby and leading Millennial Management Consultant Joan Snyder Kuhl, details the Millennial Generation, and proves why those born between 1979 and 1994 are a transformative globally aware group.

First Globals examines what the Millennials have to offer and why they are best equipped to problem solve today’s most pressing issues. First Globals is a handbook for those who lead and want to lead, and details a more holistic depiction of an outstanding group with so much potential.

"Our intention is to pivot the conversation toward the positive attributes of this generation which will accelerate workplace innovation and global leadership impact. The dismissive attitude and lack of patience for this generation are preventing organizations from maximizing their investment in new hires," Kuhl says, "and they are ultimately losing the battle for talent."

Institute Inspiration: Leaders in Action

Leaders in Action

In Leaders in Action Q&A each month, Institute partner Jason Womack interviews a leader who inspires great ethical leadership.

Bernadette McGladeOne of the most well-respected and experienced leaders in Division I athletics, Bernadette V. McGlade is entering her sixth year as the Atlantic 10 Commissioner. Her progressive guidance has created unprecedented new opportunities for the more than 5,200 student-athletes who proudly compete under the Atlantic 10 banner.

Since her own student-athlete days as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina—where she was inducted into the prestigious Order of the Valkyries, the highest honor for a female undergrad, recognizing excellence in scholarship, dynamic leadership, and innovative service—Bernadette continues to promote excellence and integrity both on the playing field and in the classroom.

- Jason Womack

Jason Womack: Do you have a simple way to think about how leaders get better?

Bernadette McGlade: Commit to learning. Stick to your vision. Leaders know enough to know they don’t know it all. This is a mindset I adopted early on. In college, I had a clear vision of where I wanted to go: athletic administration. I knew individuals working in this field, and made a point to observe them and learn from their experiences and the examples they set.

To this day, I chip away at clarifying the very specific vision of where I want to be, and then seek out ways to learn more about how to get there. Seek out and work with individuals with whom you respect. Find leaders who have qualities you admire. Smart, empathetic, extremely engaged in whatever they are doing. Leaders who lead from a place of confident humility.

JW:What was your defining moment as a leader?

NM:I think we're constantly defining ourselves. One experience that shaped who I am and what I believe took place in 1981. After just completing my playing career at the University of North Carolina, and course work for my Masters degree, I was offered, at 23 years old, a Division I head women's basketball coaching job at an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) school, Georgia Tech.

A good friend of mine said: "You are a fool to take this job, because you are too young...and you are a fool to turn down this job, because it's a tremendous opportunity." The choice was mine and I accepted the job, to be responsible, and lead my first team of great student -athletes!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"Here is a simple truism that companies should keep in mind: the more fun work is, the more willing people are to go to work. Fun fosters involvement and excitement, a willingness to try new things, and a desire to focus on the work rather than watch the clock."

-Nancy Lublin, The Power of Zilch
