The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute Welcomes New Vice President, Doug Schallau 

NEW YORK, September 1, 2010: The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute, whose mission is to strengthen the leadership of the social sector, and Leader to Leader?s Board of Governors is very pleased to announce Doug Schallau as the Institute?s new Vice President, effective September 1, 2010. 

?Mr. Schallau has a wealth of management and leadership experience and an extraordinary insight into the Institute?s mission and its opportunities. He shares the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute?s values and commitment to strengthening the leadership of the social sector,? said Manfred Altstadt, Leader to Leader Board of Governors Chairman and Chief Operating Officer for Mutual of America Life Insurance Company. 

Since March, Mr. Schallau has served as a Fund Development Advisor at Leader to Leader. ?Mr. Schallau?s background as an educator-advocate and seasoned fundraiser, with more than thirty years of experience providing opportunities for youth through education, is an exciting addition to the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute and its staff,? said Frances Hesselbein, Leader to Leader President and CEO. 

Mr. Schallau spent 32 years with the Junior Achievement organization and the last twenty years as president of Junior Achievement of New York (JANY). In this position, Mr. Schallau lead thirty-five staff professionals and was responsible for all strategic direction and operational implementation in pursuit of the mission to ?inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.? JANY?s K-12 programming is delivered annually by over 4,000 volunteers to over 95,000 students with a $4.2 million budget.   

Prior to his position as JANY president, Mr. Schallau served as JANY?s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 1986 to 1990. Before coming to New York, he served for one year as the Development Director for the National Headquarters for Junior Achievement. From 1980 to 1985 Mr. Schallau served in the JA of the Upper Midwest (Minnesota) operation holding four different positions of increased responsibility.  Mr. Schallau began his JA service as President of Junior Achievement of the Tri-States in Dubuque, IA in 1978.

Mr. Schallau received numerous team and individual JA awards including the Charles R. Hook Award, which recognizes career achievement and is conferred annually to one JA professional.

Mr. Schallau received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Marketing from Loras College in Dubuque, IA. He resides in Fairfield, CT with his wife Kate, a kindergarten teacher. He is the proud father of Maggie who holds an undergraduate degree from Villanova University and is pursuing her law degree at the Villanova School of Law and Mike, a student at DePaul University.
