Press Release For immediate release The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute Announces New Leadership Team: Manfred Altstadt Elected Board Chairman and Frances Hesselbein Appointed President and CEO NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 22, 2010 - The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute (founded as the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management in 1990) announced today that on Monday, February 15 the Board of Governors elected Manfred Altstadt, Chief Operating Officer of Mutual of America Life Insurance Company as the Chairman of the Board. Mr. Altstadt is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mutual of America Capital Management Corporation; Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mutual of America Investment Corporation; and he serves on the Board of Directors of Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, Mutual of America Corporation, Mutual of America Capital Management Corporation, Mutual of America Securities Corporation and Mutual of America Investment Corporation. Mr. Altstadt also serves on the Boards of the following non-profit organizations: Calvary Hospital, the Calvary Fund, Army War College Foundation, Mutual of America Foundation, Hazelden, New York, and ArchCare. Frances Hesselbein, previously Chairman of the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute Board of Governors, was appointed President and CEO, a role she held from 1990-2000, when she served as the founding President and CEO. Mrs. Hesselbein formerly served as the CEO of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. from 1976-1990. Her many contributions to the social sector were recognized by former President Bush, who appointed her to two commissions on National and Community service. Most recently, Mrs. Hesselbein was appointed the Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point, in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. She is the first woman and first non-graduate to serve in this chair. In addition to this honor, the University of Pittsburgh introduced The Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, aimed to produce experienced and ethical leaders who will address the most critical national and international issues and to advance positive social and economic initiatives throughout the world. Under the leadership of Mr. Altstadt and Mrs. Hesselbein, the Institute will continue to concentrate on social sector leaders and their organizations, focusing on three goal areas: • Developing social sector leaders of character and competence. • Forging cross-sector partnerships that deliver social sector results. • Providing leadership resources that engage and inform social sector leaders and their partners in business and government. The Board of Governors, comprised of leaders from the public, private and social sectors, expresses appreciation to former President and CEO Susan Phillips Bari for her service to the Institute.
