An Army spouse for 38 years, Mrs. Shinseki has devoted herself to volunteer work in the schools and community, the American Red Cross, Family Readiness Groups, The Arlington Ladies and spouse development initiatives, among other military family programs and priorities.

The inaugural Leader of the Future Award was presented to Alan Mulally, President and CEO of the Ford Motor Company in 2006. Andrea Jung, Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Avon Products, Inc. was the 2007 honoree, A.G. Lafley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Procter and Gamble Company was honored in 2008, followed in 2009 by the Honorable Eric K. The sixth Leader of the Future Award Dinner will be held at the Mutual of America Life Insurance Company's headquarters, at 320 Park Avenue in New York City.

According to Frances Hesselbein, President and CEO of Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute, "Beyond Patty's gracious humility is a determined leader who believes and demonstrates that through healing and unifying we can develop leaders of the future, who are our hope."

Mrs. Shinseki currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of The Military Child Education Coalition, and is the chair of its Living in the New Normal: Helping Children Thrive During Good and Challenging Times initiative.

In April 2011, she was appointed to the Board of Advisors for Joining Forces, a White House initiative chaired by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden that brings attention to the needs and sacrifices of veterans, service members, military families and their children, and sparks action to provide broad-based American support for them.

The Leader of the Future Award honors values-based leaders of character who have "the vision to see and the courage to shape the future." The annual Leader of the Future Award Dinner attracts leaders from all sectors—business, government and the social sector—to honor a leader whose work, career and example inspire citizens across the sectors, around the world.
